friday night lights: open thread for the debate
prepare yourself to post your comments here as we discuss the debate in real time....
mccain already won the debate (even before he flip-flopped and decided to attend even though he told us the crisis was too important to neglect and needed someone to up-end the negotiations)
hello everyone. it's 7:14 PM. I got home from work, watched the daily show and the colbert report, and now i have set up my desktop on the coffee table and i'm positioned in front of the tv. peter and emily should be back by nine. i'm trying to avoid any contact with the pundits before the debates start so my ideas and critiques can be fully my own; however, the lure of cnn is perhaps too strong. oh wolf, what do you have to say? and how do you keep that beard so perfectly trimmed day after day? anderson, why will you not come out of the closet already? campbell, why do you have to be married? and finally, gloria, when can i get you in a one-on-one interview and truly get to know your political views.
so yes, i've decided on channel 710 for the debates (that CNN HD here in the 212). Hope you all are preparing for what's to come.
again with the american worker thing from mccain. get off that stupid talking point already. don't pretend that you meant american worker when you talked about the fundamentals of the economy.
I don't understand why McCain continues to bring up funding for veterans as such a huge priority without ever mentioning any other high risk/high need groups. i.e. disabled, elderly, children in the system, and other minority groups. is it just because he is one? or because there will be a large increase in veterans pretty soon?
if I were a mom who'd lost her son in Iraq the last thing I wild want is for other mothers to have to experience the same thing. I would want those boys home and safe.
talking points memo is stressing that mccain hasn't yet made eye contact with obama. i think that's true right? it reminds me of the debates with romney in california during the primaries.
I would have gotten on sooner but our computer downstairs is having major problems. I couldn't believe it when there were already 164 comments. Good job Stephen and Peter. I noticed the unfunny Miss Congeniality comment also. Who cares about John's hair?
"I honestly don't believe that obama has the judgement and experience and made the wrong decision on russia" does that mean he thinks obama made the right decision on russia?
again with the surge? again with the mischaracterization of georgia? again with the sob veteran stories? again with the condescending: barack doesn't have the ability to understand.
I would have gotten on sooner but our computer downstairs is having major problems. I couldn't believe it when there were already 164 comments. Good job Stephen and Peter. I noticed the unfunny Miss Congeniality comment also. Who cares about John's hair?
sorry i missed it:(. i heard part on the way home from the beach and mccain was extremely condescending. i'll have more to say after i watch dad's taped version monday night...
and i read every single comment in the thread...really.

2:25 mins til the beginning.
i have a feeling its just going to be me and stephen tonight on this "live" comment blog.
sadly, i am not CNN HD. i'm on channel 10 here in brooklyn. i wish i had HD so i could see the live score card of six selected pundits...
it's started. cnn has these stupid analyst scorecards. don't know if i can handle it.
lehrer gives a shout out to the global financial crisis.
the hand shake. obama is so much better looking than mccain.
hi peter. so sad you're not here.
obama goes first! less gray hair tonight, no?
let's count the times barack says defining moment tonight
"at this time, at this moment..."
castellanos already gave mccain a negative one. what the....?
a four step plan from obama. very nice.
for looking old and decrepit
cnn has a stupid audience reaction grid going on.
is it really just going to be the two of us?
i told my dad to get on
fake shout outs don't count for crap...
kccain looks like he has bloodshot eyes.
hannah (my guest tonight) just said mccain looks like someone from the wax museum. agreed.
"working together. and i can't stand it. so i faked a campaign suspensing and ruined the bipartisanship"
i think it is just the two of us, petey. just like it's meant to be....
"this is the end of the beginning" nice rehearsed line, oldey.
nice.
point for lehr!
not letting them off the hook.
i love jim lehrer.
where is paul and tracy and ronald?
paul is in lake tahoe out with the kiddoes preparing for his big ride tomorrow.
Neither one is answering Lehrer's question.
~Mom
"a lot of us saw this train wreck coming" and yet just last week i was saying that our economy is strong. seriously. who is this guy?
story time from grandpa mccain.
i want a warm glass of milk while i read these awesome letters...
what's with the history lesson, mccain?
oh. my mom's in the fray
point for obama on the "we need leadership not just in time of crisis"
oh man. mccain pulled a funny one.
welcome shauna!!!!!
another point for lehrer!
let's hope they start talking to each other
i like that lehrer is making this a real debate.
i love it when barack writes with his left hand.
it makes him look so much more intelligent
again with the american worker thing from mccain. get off that stupid talking point already. don't pretend that you meant american worker when you talked about the fundamentals of the economy.
out of control congress of which he has been apart of for almost 3 decades...
the DNA fell flat.
is he really talking about pork barrel spending when mccain did the exact same thing?
*palin. sorry.
let's keep a bottom-up count for barack.
he needs to let his talking points go too.
lehrer wants them to go back and forth. i like it. again, mccain is just repeating the talking points he's rehearsed throughout the week.
"miss the congeniality?" seriously? Palin won that in miss alaska contest. weird that he would bring that up.
i think mccain is actually winning this segment
now they're talking directly to each other. i like, i like.
gloria borger says they are tied.
i hate "my friends"
did he just say $500,000?
good clip of mcsmirk...
have we not yet commented on mccain's combover?
mom and dad...?
no more comments?
hannah just said his smirk makes him look like dr. evil.
barack deflected that question.
what would he compromise on?
i missed the question. i was changing the channel to nbc. so much better than cnn.
barack is all over the place tonight.
he needs to zero in.
direct answer from mccain. he's better at that than obama.
nice chuckle from obama.
the boeing deal sent jobs to europe and screwed american industry. i wouldn't go bragging about that.
jim's calling them out. very nice.
obama has brought lobbyists a lot.
now he needs to start nailing lobbyist to mccain.
jim's holding their feet to the fire.
point 6 for lehrer!
he's winning this debate. hands down.
spending freeze? seriously? where did this come from?
wild and crazy mccain: spending freeze?
he's so erratic.
point for me and stevey for saying the same things over and over.
trudy: mccain's giving a shout out to your idea for nuclear oil. what do you think?
lehrer for president!!
baracks throwing it down here. finally answering the question.
where's mccain getting these numbers?
nice party platitudes. old lines: negative points.
"orgy of spending" awesome.
barack just said orgy....
again with the 'miss congeniality' thing. does he think that's funny?
what's well known?
laundry of things that have nothing to do with the budget...
90% of his vote in the last 8 years... maverick crap simply doesn't carry weight.
peter and i are on the same wavelength. it's kind of like our cycles have lined up...
Boring. Dad
my name's mccain and i love david petraues. wait, did he just say victory? doesn't his own buddy petraues argue that word should not be used?
I don't understand why McCain continues to bring up funding for veterans as such a huge priority without ever mentioning any other high risk/high need groups. i.e. disabled, elderly, children in the system, and other minority groups. is it just because he is one? or because there will be a large increase in veterans pretty soon?
strategy is one thing. but policy is much more important
barack should appoint mccain as a four star general to use his strategies to support better policies.
ron. welcome!!! it is pretty boring, actually.
dad.
we are boring?
or the debate is boring.
i agree on this debate being a little lack-lustre
emily!!!!!!!!!! awesome. welcome to the group. (i thin i've used more exclamation points here than i have in my whole life)
mccain wants to erase history.
nothing of that matters.
now he wants to just go to the future
boom for barack on the war stuff.
what's up with mccain twitch in his jaw whenever he looks down? what is that? is he playing around with his dentures?
points for obama on the iraq war.
no more stories...
i sick of his poetic moments
I second that. I'm not move at all.
seriously mccain? are you really bringing up the dying kids?
the candidates are boring. dad
mccain is strong-arming barack and is so self satisfied
iraq only became the central battleground after we caused it to become so.
I love Obama's ears
"snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?" Give me a break, mcsob-story.
hannah is officially blogging on peter's laptop. thanks petey.
i love how obama says pakistan.
no, Obama. you're wrong. McCain is the biggest threat to the US.
Obama is a native of the Middle east
when barack says paakistan instead of packistan, he sounds elitist and aloof.
and i hate it when mccain says: warsh instead of wash
oh snap, emily. nice one.
again. stevey and i made the same observations...
um....launch military strikes into pakistan? Does mccain not know that palin said that exact thing in her interview with charlie gibson last week?
remember when mccain thought that pakistan and iraq shared a border.
I'm sick of mccain travel log
did i mention that mccain has a comb over?
nice one on north korea and iran-bombing
emily. another zinger.
emily might be winning this debate. minus all the point for lehrer.
mccain is so condescending.
NO MORE HISTORY LESSONS!!!
"when i was young and reagan was president." enough with the stupid stories. tell us what you'll do now.
peter. we are so alike.
bathroom break for me.
seriously though. mccain is going to make me fall asleep.
so why not turn nows army into a peace keeping force by leaving Iraq?
NO MORE STORIES!
i'm serious. stop this crap. not only does this story suck. but it sucked the first 5 times i heard it in the last two months alone.
(oh did i mention i was tortured...? don't forget it)
if I were a mom who'd lost her son in Iraq the last thing I wild want is for other mothers to have to experience the same thing. I would want those boys home and safe.
I have a bracelet too.
Mom
obama's got a stupid story too.
peter, you shouldn't say 'sucked' in front of your mother.
boo yeah Barack. on the same page.
and alaska is the closest state to Russia
remember how many places his been.
it should make up for the fact that palin got her first passport a year ago at the age of 43. but it doesn't.
mccain, who cares where you've gone. you are old.
just like the sanctions that have been so successful in the last 5 years...
i have two new guests: sarah and kara.
"I love Obama"- Sarah
who are they?
neighbors?
THey are my Roomates...possy
ha ha. mccain can't even say that dude's name. but i can't spell it. so there.
Mccan needs to not move his arms..he looks so awkward
i love that he can't say it.
granted, few of us can. i can't. be i'm not on national TV. i'm not running for president.
i love when obama says "let's talk about this."
i love the diplomacy section.
obama will own him in this.
this is way i'm voting for him for president.
really? I'm voting for him because he's a celbrity.
and because he doesn't creep me out like McCain does.
zing for obama on the spain thing.
nailed on the spain gaffe!!
I LOVE THAT!
mccain's jokes are all falling flat.
why is mccain doing the jack bauer whisper thing?
obama has a great smile.
hannah: "obama has great vocabulary."
mccain is making stuff up.
six secretaries of state met in a conference in the last two weeks. and all of them said we need to meet with iran.
if mccain could use the internet, he might actually know that this took place.
too bad palind not here to give her exerptise on Russia.
palin is going to get smoked next week
please excuse my typos. kinda struggling on the iPhone tonight
oh mccain: you're KGB joke is so funny. why don't you keep repeating it?
point for mccain for using an awesome word: apparachik
emily: you are totally pwning this thread.
mccain hasn't had a zinger tonight.
9-10 recycled jokes that fell flat... give up on the humor
oh my gosh. mcstory. enough with the 'back in the day' stories.
it's nice to hear mccain talk about something (ukraine) intelligently. at least we know he's not a total re re.
these guys talking about who said what first reminds me of stephens familys blog.
150th!!
150th!!!!
shut up right now. how do we say the exact same things?
time's almost up. i'm so sad.
sorry stevey, you were 151st...
obama wins on polite points.
you guys are so classic
i know i know. i lost.
if that were palin...
"what part of 9/11 attack do you mean, jim?"
(awkward forced smile)
I think 9/11made it more realistic. maybe we're safer now but we also know what can happen.
just in case you wanted to know my answer to that question :)
hey mccain: does waterboarding count as torture?
hey mccain: does waterboarding count as torture?
talking points memo is stressing that mccain hasn't yet made eye contact with obama. i think that's true right? it reminds me of the debates with romney in california during the primaries.
MTA's anti-terrorist ideas: if you see something, say something.
i agree with barack that we need to shore up mass transit
what else does Obama want to do with transit? pretty soon we're not going to be able to wear clothes or bring bags on planes.
everyone loved that one by Barack.
i'm okay with a clothing-less subway...
huffington post: mccain not wearing a flag pin; obama is.
it's not failure!
it's not defeat!
petreus doesn't even say victory or defeat.
and leaving iraq will not breed terrorist. if we leave iraq, the jihadist will follow us out. to pakistan/afghanistan.
I would have gotten on sooner but our computer downstairs is having major problems. I couldn't believe it when there were already 164 comments. Good job Stephen and Peter. I noticed the unfunny Miss Congeniality comment also. Who cares about John's hair?
ma: welcome to the dominion!!!
i agree that mccain's hair doesn't matter. but it is ugly.
oh patty.
i wish you guys would have been here for the whole debate. maybe next time.
bring on the VP debate. this one is boring now.
here here obama.
(or is it hear hear? hear here?)
"I honestly don't believe that obama has the judgement and experience and made the wrong decision on russia" does that mean he thinks obama made the right decision on russia?
"i love the veterans, and i'll take care of them" is that why mc-sob-story voted against the GI bill?
again with the surge?
again with the mischaracterization of georgia?
again with the sob veteran stories?
again with the condescending: barack doesn't have the ability to understand.
if anything, mccain was on message tonight.
and I hate when McCain talks in that fake high "I care about the veterans because I know them" voice
heeeer heeereee
I would have gotten on sooner but our computer downstairs is having major problems. I couldn't believe it when there were already 164 comments. Good job Stephen and Peter. I noticed the unfunny Miss Congeniality comment also. Who cares about John's hair?
it's over!!!
see ya suckas
jim lehrer: i love you.
ahhh. it's over.
i hope this makes sense to anyone else who reads it post-script...
michells dress is wild. can't decide if i like it.
defintely don't like the pant suit on cindy.
i think embily won the debate.
followed by ron.
then jim lehrer.
pt: agreed.
i can't wait for the fact check.
it's hard to say who actually won, when my opinions are already so biased.
anderson and wolf are back on. do you think they're gay together?
peace, i'm outta here.
here here!
gloria borger is speaking now. i'm so in love with her.
borger: "obama held his own"
ahhhhh. thanks boys. does this mean I get to be president? I do know what the bush doctrine is ;)
bye pt. bye embily.
ba-bye
last.
last-er
MANILOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!
Aren't the 3 of you roommates? Did you all arrange to be in different locations for the debate so you could hold this lively discussion? :)
sorry i missed it:(. i heard part on the way home from the beach and mccain was extremely condescending. i'll have more to say after i watch dad's taped version monday night...
and i read every single comment in the thread...really.
